RAINscapeTO is an eco-landscaping social enterprise that designs, implements and maintains beautiful and earth-friendly gardens. We offer the design and installation of sustainable gardens such as pollinator and edible gardens, rain gardens and bioswales. We also provide services to support local food production and the use of native plants as vital additions to a sustainable and healthy urban landscape.
Job Purpose
The landscape designer will engage with homeowners in the design of landscaping solutions for front yards and backyards in the City of Toronto.
Duties and Responsibilities
Lead the design of residential landscaping solutions tailored to local conditions (e.g. ecosystem, sun exposure, soil type, moisture), including:
- Conduct a site visit to gather technical details and homeowner’s input.
- Produce a first draft of a garden concept
- Receive feedback from homeowner and integrate it in a timely manner.
- Produce a final version of the garden concept, including plant species and placement
- Maintain fluid communication with homeowners throughout the process.
Desired Qualifications and skills
- A degree or a combination of related training and experience in landscape architecture, horticulture or green infrastructure
- 3+ years of experience in landscaping design
- Strong working knowledge of eco-landscaping solutions, including garden design and implementation of gardening solutions with native plants, raingardens and pollinator gardens
- Strong working knowledge of hardscaping solutions such as pathways, decks, downspout disconnection, etc.
- Strong knowledge of digital design tools and google collaboration tools

Eco-Landscaping Lead, RAINscapeTO

JOB PURPOSE
The Eco-landscaping Lead is the bridge between a team of Eco-landscapers and RAINscapeTO’s Management. As the team supervisor the Lead acts as the main resource for all the eco-landscapers with regard to on-site communication, direction, and conflict resolution. In the absence of the Manager, the Eco-landscaping Lead also liaises with clients and partners, although some decisions will need to be approved by the Manager.
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
- Lead the team of eco-landscapers in the design, installation, and maintenance of residential and community eco-landscaping projects, including the following tasks:
- Ensure Health and Safety Policies, code of conduct, and regulations are followed;
- Properly maintain tools and equipment on a frequent basis;
- Coordinate and schedule eco-landscaper shifts, including transportation of staff from headquarters to project site;
- Train and monitor eco-landscapers in landscaping techniques and materials, and delegate tasks to them;
- Keep track of employee timesheets, project expenses, and supply needs;
- Collect statistical & anecdotal data to assess project successes and barriers;
- Monitor staff behaviours and report to the Manager on issues and opportunities for improvement
- Support the Management team in scheduling work, pricing and staffing;
- Support the Management team in the coordination of site work with partners and outside service providers as needed;
- Meet weekly with the Management team to discuss progress and debrief on project operations;
- Meet weekly with the eco-landscaping team to discuss and fill out progress reports and additional paperwork;
- Support the Management team in planning and delivering a Professional Development Plan for eco-landscapers, including training and workshops;
- Support the Management team in business development activities such as attendance at community events, and delivery of workshops and talks.
DESIRED QUALIFICATIONS AND SKILLS
- Full ‘G’ Drivers license is mandatory to transport yourself and the crew to and from job sites in company vehicles.
- 3 years experience in Horticulture/Landscaping preferred
- Strong eco-landscaping working knowledge, including garden design and implementation, plant ID, plant maintenance, growth cycles, deadheading, invasive species removal, shrub maintenance, and soil amendment
- Strong leadership and communication skills
- Demonstrated experience managing a team with diverse backgrounds and levels of experience
- Strong organizational and time management skills
- Excellent customer service and conflict resolution skills
- Ability to work in all weather conditions and in physically demanding tasks

Job Purpose
The Indigenous Assistant Manager will be part of RAINscapeTO’s leadership team and will work alongside the Manager to provide strategic leadership and manage all aspects of the social enterprise.
Upon a successful training period of 9 months, the Indigenous Assistant Manager will have the opportunity to transition to Manager with an updated job description and salary. During the training period the Indigenous Assistant Manager will be exposed to all aspects of the social enterprise operations. As such, this position is expected to spend at least two days per week supporting on-the-ground delivery of gardening services.
The ideal candidate has a strong interest in the natural environment, strong leadership and strategic skills, relevant experience in program and/or social enterprise management, and enjoys working in a community-based organization.

Duties and Responsibilities
In collaboration with RAINscapeTO’s Manager and supported by the leadership team, the Indigenous Assistant Manager will be responsible for the following aspects of the social enterprise.
Organization leadership
- Lead a diverse team of 5 people and oversee the operations of a diverse organization of 11 people.
- Build Indigenous leadership capacity and coordinate hiring and training process for new team members
- Support ongoing personal and professional development of staff, fostering a culture of engagement and open collaboration
- Identify and address performance issues, providing support as per human resources policies
- Liaise with funders, partners and produce reports on time
- Represent the enterprise at Toronto Green Community (TGC) Board meetings and ensure a fluid communication and collaboration.
- Represent the organization publicly, building strategic partnerships with relevant organizations and community groups and within the landscaping industry
- Collect relevant data to prepare evaluation plans and assess progress
- Research potential additional funding sources and lead proposal writing
Financial management
- Manage a budget of over $500,000
- Manage sales, billing, and expenses tracking processes.
- Work with bookkeeper and staff to ensure that the following tasks are on track:
- invoice clients promptly and manage collections and deposits of payments (primarily online)
- ensure all expenses are paid in a timely manner
- complete and submit timesheets for biweekly payroll
- provide monthly sales and expense updates
- other duties as required
- Collect statistical & anecdotal data to assess project successes and barriers
- Prepare financial reports as required
Customer and community relations
- Manage all aspects of customer relations
- acquire new clients and support all clients
- respond to queries in a professional and timely manner via email, phone, and in person
- arrange and schedule client site visits and project meetings
- provide consultation and estimates, and follow up with clients through various stages of relationship
- ensure quality of work and customer satisfaction
- Liaise with community groups, neighbourhood groups, industry and business associations to create greater awareness of the initiative, attract Indigenous talent, promote blue-green infrastructure solutions and garner support for the project
- Supervise relevant staff in the planning and delivery of workshops, community forums, events and presentations
- Oversee website, newsletter and social media communications
Landscaping
- Oversee the design, installation and maintenance of residential and community eco-landscaping projects
- Support site assessment for rain garden potential and suggest eco-friendly solutions for clients
- Prepare estimates and submit proposals, ensuring target gross margins
- Schedule and oversee installations with support from the coordinator and/or team lead, helping with on-the-ground delivery of gardening services as required.
- Ensure all permits and health and safety requirements are in place
- Coordinate site work with clients, suppliers and outside service providers as needed
Qualifications and Skills
Required
- A degree in environmental sciences, business administration, social development, landscape architecture, design, engineering or a combination of related training and experience.
- 3+ years of experience in business, social enterprises and/or program management.
- Demonstrated experience managing a team with diverse backgrounds and levels of experience.
- Strong leadership, interpersonal and communication skills
- Demonstrated financial skills
- Effective organizational and project management skills
- Excellent customer service and conflict resolution skills.
- Working knowledge of human resources management and social development policies and practices.
- Working knowledge of best management practices for Indigenous leadership development and reconciliation processes.

- Interest in ecological gardening and understanding of Low Impact Development/green infrastructure design and installation
- Full ‘G’ Drivers license.

- Knowledge of plant identification (both horticultural varieties and native plants, trees, shrubs, and common weeds)

Compensation
This is a full-time position, 35 hours per week, with an hourly rate starting at $35.00. Pay commensurate with experience.

JOB PURPOSE
The RAINscapeTO Eco-Landscaper will be part of a dynamic team of passionate landscapers in designing, installing and maintaining gardens on private and public properties across the City of Toronto. No previous experience is required. The position consists of paid training and site work. Transportation between sites is provided and a TTC monthly pass will be provided for transportation to and from job start location.
No previous experience is required. Just a passion for the outdoors and sustainability!
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
The main responsibility of this position is to undertake all the tasks associated with the installation and maintenance of gardens on private and public properties under the guidance of the Lead and in collaboration with the team members. Some of these tasks include:
- planting various and native plant species (i.e. bulbs, flowers, shrubs, trees);
- digging rain gardens, grading;
- disconnecting downspouts and redirecting water to rain barrels or rain gardens;
- laying compost, mulch, soil, and installing other materials (i.e gravel, rocks, lining);
- garden maintenance, including removing and/or trimming trees and plants; weeding, dead heading, pruning, seed collection, watering;
- cleaning debris, litter from residential and commercial jobs;
- tool upkeep and maintenance;
- collecting, separating litter and removing weeds from BIA worksites;
- providing professional customer service;
- weekly reporting and team meetings with managers.
QUALIFICATIONS
- Preference given to candidates with ‘G’ or ‘G2’ Class driver’s license.
- Withstand up to 7 hours of physically demanding labour
- Adapt to varying tasks, conditions and locations
- Willing to work outdoors in changing weather (heat, rain, cold)
- Responsible, punctual, detail-oriented, reliable and flexible
- Manual dexterity, hand-eye coordination, attention to detail
- Good interpersonal skills with the ability to work well in a team setting with co-workers and provide professional customer service for clients
- Interest in horticulture, plant identification, ecological gardening
